"My medieval manuscripts"' ou "comment envoyer des manuscrits médiévaux au clos d'équarissage"
Je ne poserai aucun jugement sur le personnage de Guillermito, haut en couleurs, brillant et tout et tout. Je n'ai rien à dire quant à l'affaire judiciaire qui l'oppose actuellement à une boite de logiciels. Ce n'est pas mon boulot et, même si je suis cette affaire, je n'ai pas assez de connaissances en la matière pour poser un jugement autre que "je pense que..." , ce dont, franchement, vous vous fichez et vous avez bien raison.
Parlons de ce que je connais mieux. Titillé par une remarque d'Eolas à propos des goûts du dit Guillermito pour les manuscrits anciens, amusé, je commençais à trouver l'homme sympathique, je me suis donc décidé à rendre visite au site du monsieur.
Et là, j'ai vu quelque chose qui m'a retourné le coeur. Voyez-vous, je puis contempler toutes les horreurs possibles avec un air plus ou moins détaché, mais regarder la "collection de manuscrits médiévaux" que notre ami se constitue, excusez l'expression, mais ça m'a fait gerber (au sens figuré, je sais encore me tenir).
On sait que les périodes anciennes nous ont laissé peu de documents. Que les manuscrits sont rares. C'est notre patrimoine, des spécialistes les conservent et les étudient comme tels. Il y a des textes de l'Antiquité qui ne nous sont transmis que par un seul manuscrit. C'est, entre autres, ma mission que d'étudier ces manuscrits et ces archives, pas seulement pour les textes qu'ils contiennent, mais pour eux-mêmes aussi : l'étude d'un manuscrit ancien, de sa provenance, de la façon dont on l'a copié, de sa reliure, de son écriture, de son destin... cela apprend mille choses sur l'histoire de l'écrit, sur les hommes qui écrivaient, sur leur culture... On reconstitue ainsi des bibliothèques anciennes disparues, on remet en pleine lumière des copistes et leurs abbayes, disparus jusque là et tout d'un coup ressuscités.
Un grand nombre de ces manuscrits se trouve "en sécurité" dans les bibliothèques publiques ou semi-publiques et dépôts d'archives. D'autres appartiennent à des personnes privées, souvent des héritages de famille, transmis de père en fils jusqu'au dernier héritier qui n'a rien à foutre de ces vieux papiers mais qui sait que leur vente rapportera de quoi se payer sa Porsche 4x4 rubis sur l'ongle. Le reste est connu: Sotheby's ou autre salle de vente prestigieuse. Le Ministère de la Culture tente alors un rachat, mais les sommes offertes par les autres amateurs, notamment américains, sont colossales.
D'autres "possesseurs" de manuscrits décident de les revendre en les dépeçant, aidés en cela par des vautours qui se font passer pour des "libraires", mais qui ne sont que d'infâmes boutiquiers. Car vendre un manuscrit folio par folio est trrrrrès intéressant. Surtout si sa provenance est douteuse (combien de vols non élucidés dans les bibliothèques et les dépôts d'archives...?). Vendre Le Cri de Munch en morceaux ne rapportera rien. Vendre en morceaux un manuscrit cistercien "tombé du ciel" rapporte 2000 dollars le folio -je cite: " I remember I was about to buy an intact page of it, but well, it was 2000 dollars" sic...- environ 200 folios par manuscrit, faites le compte...). Et si le manuscrit est de provenance douteuse, le "libraire" prendra soin de faire disparaitre les quelques morceaux de folios où se trouvent les cachets des bibliothèques d'origine. C'est une catastrophe culturelle chaque fois: voilà un manuscrit qu'on ne reconstituera plus jamais, qu'aucun historien ne pourra utiliser ou étudier. C'est, réellement, une part du patrimoine de l'humanité qui disparait. Inutile de dire que s'il y avait un texte inconnu de Salluste là-dessus, vous vous brossez pour le reconstituer. Eventuellement, vous aurez une ou deux pages e basta.
Vendre un manuscrit complet, acquis honnêtement, à un milliardaire américain, c'est triste mais pas dramatique: le document pourrait être encore consultable chez ce monsieur (c'est ce qu'a fait Paul Getty...) ou réapparaitrait sur le marché public du manuscrit plus tard. Mais ces manuscrits dépecés et vendus à la pièce, qu'ils aient été acquis honnêtement ou non, c'est une catastrophe scientifique.
Ce dépeçage n'aurait pas lieu s'il n'y avait pas un marché... Or, ces gens qui achètent les manuscrits par folio, ce ne sont pas les milliardaires qui, eux, ont les moyens de se payer l'ensemble dans sa reliure d'origine. Non, le public visé, ce sont les "petits" acheteurs, vous ou moi ou Guillermito, vous qui aimez les vieilles choses, qui affichez chez vous, sous cadre, des gravures anciennes (souvent elles aussi découpées dans les vieux ouvrages imprimés pour les vendre "à part", plus cher), vous qui appréciez les écritures colorées, le vieux parchemin troué, l'émotion de l'ancien. VOUS êtes le public. Alors les vautours dépiautent les vieux manuscrits, puisque vous êtes là pour les acheter. 2000 dollars le folio cistercien ? Trop cher ? Qu'à cela ne tienne, je vous découpe un bout de folio pour le tiers ou le quart du prix, je sais que d'autres se rueront sur les autres morceaux après vous... Car, regardez bien le dit morceau, regardez comme il a été bien découpé au ciseau par le "libraire", pour faire un morceau de 3x8 cm (alors que le manuscrit, d'après l'heureux possesseur, devait faire 60x45 -on en fait, des petits morceaux avec un folio, hein... et s'il vous plait, M'sieur Guillermito, précisez le "destroyed", ajoutez "by" et le nom du libraire chez qui vous l'avez acheté ;-) ).
Tous les autres documents de la collection Guillermito ont le même profil: folios de manuscrits dépecés. C'est bien dommage. J'ose espérer que Guillermito ignorait ce que je vous explique ici. Laissons-lui le bénéfice du doute ... ce sont des erreurs que bien des gens -et des historiens même !- ont commis et commettent encore, malgré tout, par inconscience ou ignorance. Mais n'oubliez jamais le fameux perseverare diabolicum... Vous savez maintenant. J'espère que, maintenant, Guillermito et vous tous qui lisez ces lignes ferez attention désormais. Aimer les beaux documents n'est pas un crime. Les acheter dans des circonstances normales, non plus. Mais les acquérir en dépouilles, comme stigmatisé ci-dessus, le tout en connaissance de cause, constituerait un comportement inqualifiable, témoignant au contraire d'un mépris évident des documents eux-mêmes, et d'un irrespect répugnant à l'égard du passé et des hommes qui se sont meurtris les yeux et les mains pour nous transmettre leur oeuvre.

Bonjour. Je n'ai pas beaucoup de temps en ce moment (a cause du proces et d'une connexion internet pas terrible), mais ce que vous dites m'interesse beaucoup, et je vous invite a m'ecrire un de ces jours quand mes histoires se seront calmees pour en discuter. Le fragment de manuscrit cistercien m'a ete offert par Charles Edwin Puckett (de memoire, cepuckett.com), un des plus gros collectionneurs americains, un jour qu'il etait a Boston pour une expo. On a discute pendant plusieurs heures, il exposait un grand nombre de manuscrits (et un livre relie entier dont je ne me souviens plus l'origine). Je lui ai achete un ou deux parchemins, il a bien compris ma fascination pour la page cistercienne, et il m'a offert ce minuscule fragment, en m'expliquant que la page dont il provient etait a peu pres entierement detruite, il n'avait pu sauver que de petits morceaux. Je ne pense pas que ce collectionneur professionnel (oui, c'est son metier que de vendre des manuscrits anciens) puisse etre soupconne de quelconque bidouillage ou manipulation pour tirer un plus grand profit, au mepris du respect que l'on doit a ces artefacts historiques. J'ai achete d'autres manuscrits, de moindre valeur, sur eBay ou chez d'autres collectionneurs pros (de memoire encore, Griffon Manuscripts).
Pour etre franc, ca m'a surpris de voir qu'aux US, on pouvait acheter ce genre de chose que je trouverais plus a sa place dans un musee que dans mon appartement. Mais j'ai une grande fascination et un grand respect pour ces manuscrits. C'est un peu pour partager cette fascination que je les montre sur mon site web.
Mais votre reaction a insere le doute dans mon esprit. Vous avez l'air d'etre bien plus au courant que moi de possibles trafics ou manipulations, et je m'en voudrait d'avoir participe a de telles choses. Donc, ecrivez-moi pour que l'on en discute.

Je suis bien aise de vous lire et encore plus de vous voir manifester votre bonne foi. Je me ferai un plaisir de discuter avec vous de tout cela, plus tard: je vous écris un petit email pour garder le contact. Hélas, manipulations et trafics sont monnaie courante en ce qui concerne manuscrits et imprimés anciens. De manière générale, TOUT folio acheté séparément est le produit du déreliage volontaire et de la découpe sauvage d'un manuscrit souvent plus ou moins complet, à des fins mercantiles. Aux USA, j'ai déjà constaté que cela se fait au vu et su de tous, même en plein colloque de médiévistes comme à Kalamazoo (!!!) ; en Europe, ces fragments se vendent sous le manteau, c'est assez mal vu. Bien souvent, ces délitages ne servent qu'à accroître les gains des libraires (ces collectionneurs dont vous parlez, si je comprends bien) ou encore à dissimuler des acquisitions frauduleuses. Mais je le répète, mon but n'est pas de juger mais d'expliquer, de faire comprendre.

Sur ce point, j'ai remarqué qu'on se faisait beaucoup d'illusion sur les possibilités de la numérisation. Quand j'ai commencé à travailler en archive, plusieurs personnes m'ont demandé pourquoi j'avais besoin de voyager comme ça, que "je trouverais tout sur internet". Et d'être très surpris que rares étaient les dépôts d'archive ayant seulement un inventaire relativement détaillé en ligne...
Numériser, c'est un gros boulot, surtout si on veut que ce soit utilisable pour autre chose que des fonds d'écran, ce qui veut dire, d'une part, une certaine exhaustivité pour un fonds donné (tout le monde ne cherche pas la même chose); d'autre part une très bonne qualité de photographie (je m'esquinte joyeusement la vue sur certaines photos de documents que j'ai prise moi-même et qui n'auraient déja pas été évidents à déchiffrer sur l'original...). Du coup, ça a effectivement un coût élévé, en main d'oeuvre essentiellement. Et si on veut faire plus qu'une petite galerie pour les curieux et en faire un outil de travail poour les chercheurs, ça représente un volume considérable de documents, même en se restreignant aux fonds médiévaux des bibliothèques.
Pour les archives, la tâche est trop immense pour être seulement envisagée. Surtout en avançant vers les époques plus récentes.

Le Plume : tu as raison de dire que ce n'est pas simple de numériser. J'ai commencé à en parler sur mon blog mais il y aurait beaucoup à dire. En ce qui concerne les manuscrits médiévaux, et en particulier les enluminures, les bibliothèques ont commencé, mais les campagnes de numérisation reposent sur des campagnes plus anciennes de photographie desdites enluminures. Cela conduit à des bases d'images qui sont, à mon avis, à la numérisation ce que le fragment de Guillermito est au manuscrit cistercien complet... Mais c'est toujours quelque chose. C'est juste dommage de se dire que dans 5 ou 10 ans il faudra repasser ces documents fragiles au scanner pour recoller les bouts qu'on a ignorés jusqu'à présent parce qu'ils n'étaient pas assez jolis.
